Slavonia, a part of the hinterland in the east of Croatia, has been neglected by tourists for years, but in the most recent period, tourism is taking off at rocket speed in the most agriculturally developed part of Croatia. Indeed, the rich rural landscape has enormous potential and great value. This region, where restaurants, hotels and shops are open all year round, knows no seasonality.
In Slavonia you can enjoy the beauty of the vineyards and the great Graševina wine. The oldest cellar in Croatia – Kutjevački podrum is one of the oldest cellars in South-Eastern Europe and was built in 1232. Slavonia is also known for the kindest inhabitants and excellent hosts who still carry the hospitality and cordiality of the old Slavs. At the confluence of the Danube and Drava rivers, nature has created one of the most beautiful and best-preserved natural parks in Danubia - Kopački rit, and the oldest European town, located in Slavonia, is called Vinkovci. The area in which the heart of the Pannonian Sea beats is suitable for cyclists, active hiking, running, walking or just hiking in nature. This region literally attracts tourists with its beautiful rivers, lakes, and vast fields.
The history of the Slavonic regions has been very eventful, but since the invaders have always stayed in this area and never come empty-handed, this destination enjoys a rich culture and delicious gastronomy. Here you will feel the spirit of Hungary, a combination of Austria and a series of references brought here by the Ottoman Empire. Many nations live here in harmony and honor their traditions, songs, dances, culture and gastronomy.
On your list of places you must visit in Slavonia, be sure to write the city of heroes Vukovar, the small fairy-tale town Ilok, but also the city of Đakovo, where you will find the majestic Cathedral of St. Petra – one of the youngest temples in Croatia, as well as the state Lipizzan stud. Don't forget to stop in Osijek too – a lively, vibrant, dynamic and cheerful city of good fun and even better food. In Slavonski Brod, stroll along the largest continental monument – the Brod fortress, which is compared in size to Diocletian's Palace in Split, and enjoy a coffee in one of the many cafes overlooking the Sava River.
